The mansion was built by W.C. Ellis in 1893. According to the History of Benton County, Ellis was vice president of Farmers National Bank of Vinton and president of the Vinton Savings Bank. He was also an owner-officer of the Kelley Canning Company which would feature a number of names over the years, including the Iowa Canning Company. In the 1890s, it was recognized as the first corn canning factory west of the Mississippi River.

W.C. Ellis also led the Ellis Lumber Company in Vinton, beginning in the 1870s. In the mid-1930s, L.J. McDowell would form a partnership with Ellis' grandson, making it the Ellis McDowell Lumber Company. It became McDowells Inc. in 1969.
