All I have to say is... THANK GOD for spell-check!

Unless you're a spelling bee champion, chances are that you've had to look up how to spell a word at some point. As somebody who writes articles as part of my job, I'm not afraid to admit that there are some words that continue to trip me up!

Using Google Trends, we took a look at the top words that Iowans have a hard time spelling. Over the course of the last year, here are the most popular searches starting with "how do you spell" here in the state of Iowa:

  1. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
  2. Crochet
  3. Exercise
  4. Oxygen
  5. Competition
  6. Leprechaun
  7. Reasons
  8. Rhyme
  9. Tought (definitely a word, but did they actually mean "taught?")
  10. Breakfast

Surprisingly, the list of the top searches that start with "how to spell" are totally different! Here are the top ten in Iowa:

  1. Gorgeous
  2. Minutes
  3. Quite
  4. Serious
  5. Actually
  6. Miscellaneous
  7. Immediately
  8. Future
  9. Pennsylvania
  10. Probably

To be totally honest with you, there are a couple of words that I typed on that list that had to be corrected by spell-check ("miscellaneous" is a tough one!). But, the word that I've had to look up how to spell the most is "souvenir." I have spelled it so wrong that even spell-check couldn't figure out what I was typing! I have NEVER spelled it right on the first try.

Is there a word that you still have a tough time with, no matter how many times you've had to use it? Let us know in the comments or by sending us a message on our station app!
