Walgreens Nasal Spray Recall Impacts Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin
A massive recall of over 41,000 bottles of nasal spray sold at Walgreens nationwide has been ordered. This recall also impacts Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall of 41,328 bottles of a Walgreens-branded nasal spray due to the presence of a contaminant found in raw milk. Specifically, the recall was announced due to "microbial contamination of a non-sterile product," per People.

The Affected Product:
The product in question is Walgreens Saline Nasal Spray with Xylitol, with a Walgreens spokesperson providing a statement to People in lieu of the recall:
Under the guidance of the FDA, our supplier has initiated a voluntary recall of Walgreens Saline Nasal Spray WITH XYLITOL. This was done out of an abundance of caution and the safety of our customers remains our top priority. Consumers with affected product should not use it and return it to a store for a full refund - Walgreens spokesperson, per People
The bacteria, known as pseudomonas lactis, is apparently linked to animals. It can be found in chicken feces, but it's also a "psychrotrophic bacterial from bovine raw milk," per the National Library of Medicine.

Lot and Label Numbers for the Nasal Spray:
The recall was listed as a Class II, the second most serious type of recall the FDA has. It's defined as "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."
The affected bottles of Walgreens Saline Nasal Spray with Xylitol are as follows:
- Lot 71409 (expires Feb. 28, 2027)
- Lot 71861 (expires Aug. 31, 2027)
Both products were distributed nationwide. And being this product is being recalled amidst the annual flu season, there's reason to believe more of these bottles have been sold now than any other time of year.
