Warning: Highly Contagious Disease on the Rise in Iowa
It's fall in Iowa—arguably the season many of us look forward to most. I know I do. Cooler days, cozy (if not chilly) nights, and vibrant autumn colors. But with the change in season, there's one downside we can’t ignore: the rise in illnesses.
Along with the usual allergies, there’s one respiratory illness that’s been making a concerning comeback — pertussis.

You may know pertussis by its more familiar name: whooping cough. And unfortunately, it’s on the rise.
Whooping Cough is on the Rise in Iowa
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), whooping cough cases are climbing sharply across the country. In just one year, cases surged from 3,771 to 16,735—a troubling trend that has health officials on high alert.
Here in Iowa, the situation mirrors the national trend. University of Iowa Health Care recently reported that pertussis cases in the state have nearly doubled.
As of early September, Iowa had recorded 73 cases, compared to just 35 at the same time last year and 21 two years ago.
Whooping Cough: A Serious Threat, Especially for Vulnerable Groups
Whooping cough can be especially dangerous, even fatal, for infants and those with weakened immune systems.
Vaccination remains the best defense.
The CDC recommends that anyone 6 weeks or older get vaccinated to help prevent the spread of this highly contagious illness. Even if you’ve been vaccinated, a booster shot may be necessary to maintain immunity.
Symptoms to Watch For
Whooping cough often begins with mild symptoms, such as a persistent cough, runny nose, and low fever. But as the illness progresses, it can lead to intense coughing fits. The namesake "whoop" sound that gives the disease its name comes from the high-pitched gasp for breath after a coughing spell.
