There is something pretty special about seeing your artwork on display. For some Cedar Rapids kids, that artwork could soon be rolling through their neighborhood on a city snowplow.

The City of Cedar Rapids Public Works Department is once again inviting local schools, daycares and organizations to take part in its annual Paint A Plow program. The program gives participants the opportunity to decorate a city snowplow blade before it heads out to help clear local streets during the winter. The 2026 Paint A Plow program will run weekly from September 29th through October 31st.

Public Works staff will provide the paint, brushes and tarps needed for the project when the plow blade is dropped off. From there, participants get to decide what their blade will look like and turn a piece of city equipment into a colorful work of art. That's just the beginning of the fun.

The decorated snowplow blades will be used on roads near the schools and daycares that participate. That means children will have a chance to spot their creations around Cedar Rapids when snow starts falling and city crews begin clearing the roads.

It is a fun way for kids to see something they helped create become part of the community. Instead of simply painting something that stays inside a classroom or building, their artwork gets to head outside and serve a practical purpose during the winter months.

The city is also asking participants to take pictures while they paint their plows. Photos of the completed creations can be submitted to s.cox@cedar-rapids.org for sharing on the City of Cedar Rapids' Facebook page. Submissions should include the name of the school or organization and a brief description of the creation. Registration for the 2026 Paint A Plow program is currently open. Get signed up today!
