Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Will Soon Have a New Name
It was a good run for the site known as Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. However, after two decades, Iowa's largest concert venue will soon have a new name.
Wells Fargo Arena's naming rights for the arena at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines ends July 1st, 2025. The Des Moines Register reports that after that date, the building will then be known as the Casey's Center, named after Iowa's own Casey's General Stores. Officials with Polk County or the venue's management didn't specify how much the naming rights deal is worth. The Register reports that more details about the agreement with Casey's will be available at the Polk County Board of Supervisors tonight.
The Register reports that the naming rights deal is the first of its kind for Casey's, and will last for 10 years. And yes, as you might expect, Casey's pizza and other Casey's snacks will be available inside the new Casey's Center. According to the Register, Community Choice Credit Union has renewed the naming rights for the convention center. Naming rights for Hy-Vee Hall expire at the end of the year.
Wells Fargo purchased the naming rights for the arena in May of 2001 for $11.5 million according to the Register. Wells Fargo Arena officially opened on July 12th, 2005 as part of the Iowa Events Center complex with a price tag of $99 million. Do you remember what the first event ever held there? It was Tony Hawk's 'Boom Boom Huck Jam'. The first-ever concert held at the arena was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
So who holds the attendance record at Wells Fargo Arena? That would go to the king of country George Strait. The Register reports that his show in April of 2014 drew 15,843 fans. Garth Brooks holds the record for the largest overall concert attendance with his six shows drawing 94,214 fans to Des Moines according to the Register.
