NewBo City Market’s Big Expansion Project Will Begin This Fall

After being put on pause earlier this year, NewBo City's Market's makeover is moving forward!

In May of 2024, it was announced that NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids would be raising funds to undergo a huge expansion project. Called “Next Level Local,” the project includes the addition of a second level, spaces for up to ten new shopkeepers, a grocery store, a new bar that opens up to the patio for outdoor events, an indoor stage/performance area, a recording studio, and more. The campaign has a budget of around $6.1 million dollars.

What the Market Will Look Like When Its Done:

According to the Corridor Business Journal, the Next Level Local campaign got a huge boost back in September when the market was given $1.3 million dollars in reimbursement grants from the EDA (Economic Development Authority). At that time, construction on the project was set to begin in January and be completed by the summer. Unfortunately, that timeline had to be pushed.

What Happened?

Because of the pauses in federal funding from the government earlier this year, the Corridor Business Journal reported in February that the leaders at NewBo would be delaying construction until the situation was resolved. We're happy to report that the wheels are now back in motion!

When Will Construction Start?

The latest article from the Corridor Business Journal says the the federal grants have been released, with the announcement made by NewBo City Market CEO Julie Parisi on April 10th. The official groundbreaking ceremony will take place on September 1st. But, that doesn't mean the fundraising is over. The article reads:

"A total of $4.25 million has been raised for the project to date, but due to rising construction costs and looming tariff concerns, the project’s total budget has increased, and the market now needs to close a $1.25 million funding gap."

Through August, any donations made to NewBo's Next Level campaign will be matched (up to $50,000), courtesy of Cedar Rapids City Council member David Maier and his partner Matt McGrane. You can make a donation online HERE.
