Is Milwaukee Still One of the Most Dangerous Cities in 2024?

In 2023, things were not going well in Milwaukee.  The general state of living may have been okay but violent crime was rampant and that landed them in several of the most dangerous city lists.  They come out every year and show cities that have a few, let's say, issues.

These issues, if addressed correctly can get these cities headed in the right direction and away from the dangers that they once faced.  Milwaukee is a perfect example of what can be done.

I'm a fan of Wisconsin, so know that.  I want you to do better.  Back in my concert-going days, Wisconsin was one of the many states we saw shows in.

What Violent Crime is Occurring in Milwaukee?

In 2023, Milwaukee was on Roadsnacks Most Dangerous Cities list and it came in at #12.  It wasn't top ten but only two away, so, close enough.  But what a difference a year can make and it has been a banner year in Milwaukee.

In 2023, trends were showing in Milwaukee that the most violent crimes were leveling off or coming down.  According to Wisconsin Public Radio Homicides in Milwaukee are down this year. Compared to the same time last year, they've dropped by 21%, and in the first quarter of 2024, they're down 29% compared to 2023.

Back in 2022, Milwaukee set a record with 227 homicides, but that number dropped to 183 in 2023. So far in 2024, there have been 29 homicides, which puts the city on track for about 120 by the end of the year.

Other crimes like aggravated assault, burglaries, and arson are also down in the city this year compared to last year. Fox News Reports property crime is down 10% compared to this point in 2023 and Auto thefts are down 3% compared to this point in 2023.

Milwaukee is Taking a Pro-active Approach

Milwaukee leaders credit community partnerships and collaborations with leaders, the police, and violence prevention groups like the Office of Wellness and Safety for helping to lower homicide rates as well as other violent crimes in the city.

What they take is called a public health approach to addressing violence. What that looks like is what they say is using “evidence-based practices and strategies” to create programs that help with the issue.

What is the Update on Milwaukee?

The good news is the collaborations look to be working in Milwaukee.  Milwaukee still shows up on the most dangerous list but the ranking in 2024  is almost like it's not even the same as Milwaukee.  They show up at #33 this time around a major improvement.  For most lists you want to be top 10, not this one.  The further back, the better.  Good job, Milwaukee, keep it up!
