The Starbucks strike in Iowa, happening in Iowa City and Davenport, is part of a larger national movement by the Starbucks Workers United (SWU) union. It all comes down to the union and Starbucks not being able to reach an agreement on a new contract, which is why workers are pushing for better wages, scheduling, and working conditions.

That seems to be a rallying cry as of late for workers and what does that mean for us here in the Midwest?  For Iowa, this means a few things.

Store Closures or Limited Hours

KCRG reports that the Iowa City and Davenport Starbucks locations will be part of the strike, meaning those stores could close or operate at reduced hours during the strike. So, if you're planning to grab your usual coffee at one of those locations, you might find the store closed or with long lines or maybe even picket lines.

Workers' Struggles

Baristas are frustrated with their pay and working conditions. They're asking for a $20 minimum wage, 5% annual raises, and better benefits. This is especially tough around the holidays when the pressure to work long hours is high. Workers are trying to make sure they get fair pay for all the hard work they put in, especially during the busy holiday season.

My biggest issue with Starbucks and I drink it almost every day is consistency.  I understand workers' struggles but you have to get the orders right on the regular and then we'll get to that.  My drink is wrong more than it's right and it's not that difficult.

More Attention on the Issue

The strike is also getting a lot of media attention, including in Iowa. Workers are calling out the huge pay gap between them and the executives, with Starbucks' CEO receiving millions while employees get small raises. As the strike continues, more people might become aware of these issues, especially with the timing around Christmas Eve.

We've seen trickle-down economics. It's been here for decades, and it works about as well as plaque-filled arteries. Just so we are clear, atherosclerosis is not good, which is the plaque-filled arteries part, but if you're interested, read up.

Impact on Starbucks and the Community

If the strike drags on or spreads to other locations, it could affect how much business Starbucks does, not just in Iowa but nationwide. It could also influence how customers view the company. If people see workers pushing for better conditions, they might be more supportive of the union’s cause.

The strike is a big deal for Iowa. It could lead to some inconveniences for Starbucks customers, but it’s also shining a light on the struggles workers are facing. If it gains more attention, it might push Starbucks to make some changes in how it treats its employees.

What do you think?

Are you a Starbucks fan?  If so, what side are you on, if any?  I understand that sometimes it's easier to turn a blind eye but one day that could catch up with us all.
