Air Quality in Eastern Iowa to Drop Due to Wildfire Smoke

You have probably noticed our hazy weather conditions this week, and no doubt have heard by now that the cause is smoke and haze from Canadian wildfires. That smoke will be causing even more problems today across areas of Eastern Iowa.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources issued a statewide Air Quality Alert. It will be in effect through Thursday morning at 6 a.m. Some areas of Eastern Iowa could reach the red category, or unhealthy level, in some areas.

What is Causing the Smoke to Affect Eastern Iowa?

Our weather partners at KCRG report that a cold front that brought us rain last night will result in cool air sinking behind that front, bringing wildfire smoke that had been in the upper levels of the atmosphere to funnel down to the surface. That is why the Iowa DNR issued the Air Quality Alert.

KCRG reports that according to computer models that they use to track air quality, a small, narrow band of the poorest air conditions could extend across portions of Eastern Iowa today, including the city of Cedar Rapids.

Who Will Be Affected by the Poor Air Quality?

KCRG reports that if you suffer from a heart or lung condition, you should probably plan on spending more time than usual indoors today. In fact, if conditions reach the red level, even healthy people should limit strenuous outdoor activities until the smoke has passed.

The Gazette reports that portions of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan were rated 'very unhealthy' on Tuesday, with hospitals reporting an increase in patients with respiratory problems.
