A New Dog Park Will Open in Cedar Rapids This Week
Cedar Rapids will get its third dog park later on this week! The 12th Avenue Dog Park is set to open its gates on Friday, July 19th at 10:30 a.m.
Located at 405 12th Avenue SE in the Oak Hill Jackson Neighborhood, the 12th Avenue Dog Park is around a half-acre in size. It is completely fenced-in and equipped with benches and concrete entry areas, but there is still more to come. The Cedar Rapids city website says:
"Later this summer, a shade structure with picnic tables, a drinking fountain, and jug filler will be added."
According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the new dog park was funded by a $25,000 donation from Watts Group Iowa, as well money from the American Rescue Plan Act. The shade structure that is set to be built in the coming months is funded by a donation from Canadian National.
The 12th Avenue Dog Park was initially set to open last week on Friday, July 12th, but an email from the city says that it was pushed back a week to "allow more time for the sod to establish before anticipated heavy use." If you want to visit the park with your pup, it's $6 for a day pass, or $38 for a permit that lasts until the end of the year. The permit allows unlimited use of all three of the city's dog parks, including Cheyenne and K9Acres. You can purchase them online HERE. You can also enter to win a dog park permit if you attend Friday's ribbon-cutting ceremony!
We're happy to report that a fourth Cedar Rapids dog park is also in the works over at the former golf course in Jones Park. Construction hasn't started yet, but the Cedar Rapids city website reports that it will be around 10-acres and feature separate areas for large dogs and small dogs, a training yard, a pond, and a rentable area. You can read more about plans for the Jones Dog Park HERE.
