Popular Eastern Iowa Sweet Corn Farm Stops Sales
As the hot, dry summer caused a delay in the start of sweet corn season for many sellers here in Iowa, it continues to be a struggle for an Ely farmer who refuses to sell sub-par corn to the public. If Mother Nature starts providing some rain, it may only be temporary.
As such, KCRG says Wink's sweet corn is wrapping up general sales. Butch Wieneke made the decision last Thursday, saying the quality of their harvest is not up to satisfactory standards.
It just dried up. The ears weren’t filling out and I wasn’t going to sell sub-par corn. It’s just...I’m not going to do that. I don’t care what price it is
The lack of rain in Eastern Iowa has led to a lack of orders, and it's not a problem limited to Weinke and his farm in Ely. He has tried to work with sellers in Shueyville and West Liberty who are seeing the same poor conditions leading to poor quality.
If and when conditions approve, Wieneke says he will open back up. In the meantime, customers can check out his inventory on a "You Pick" basis, where they stop by and pick out their ears. This opportunity begins Thursday, August 4, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. According to their Facebook page:
Our famous "You Pick" option will be starting on Thursday, August 4th! For $3/dozen, you are welcome to come to the field at 2111 Banner Valley Rd and pick up to 5 dozen per person (we want to make sure everyone gets a chance to enjoy, please). Gates will open at 8 AM and close at 6 PM. Please do not pick the last 6 rows that are taped off by the beans. As always, be respectful & smile for the trail cams if you see one!
