Over the past few years, I've had WAY too many airline travel horror stories.

I've had an airline lose my luggage, flights delayed or canceled on me, and I also have nearly vomited in my seat during a particularly turbulent trip.

Now, the Department of Transportation has set up new rules that mandates automatic refunds for "significantly delayed or canceled flights," according to reports.

When you are traveling for the holidays, keep in mind that you will be entitled to refunds after this change in the DOT rules.

Passengers are entitled to refunds under the following conditions:

Canceled or Significantly Changed Flights

A "significant change" is now officially defined as:

  • Domestic flights delayed by three hours or more, and international flights delayed by six hours or more
  • Arrival or departure at a different airport
  • Increase in the number of connections
  • Downgrade to a lower class of service
  • Connections that require travel through different airports
  • Flights on different planes that may be less accessible for individuals with disabilities

Significantly Delayed Baggage Return

If you are ever in the unfortunate situation where you might lose or have your baggage mishandled and you file a mishandled baggage report, then you could get a refund of your checked bag fee.

You are entitled to reimbursement if your bag is not delivered within twelve hours of arrival for domestic flights or within fifteen to thirty hours for international flights.

Extra Services Not Provided

If the airline fails to provide a promised service—such as in-flight Wi-Fi, seat selection, or entertainment—the passenger will receive a refund for that service.

In addition, these refunds must be; automatic, prompt, in the cash/original form of payment, and in the full amount.

For more details about this new plan, make sure to check out the official write up from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
