We've all been at a stoplight that feels like it's gone on forever. You sit. You wait. Since most of us have low attention spans, you may reach for your phone to pass the time.

But, is that technically illegal?

While there have been recent pushes for stronger hands-free laws, one thing is that's for sure, using your phone at a red light is not allowed.

Using Your Phone at a Red Light In Iowa

It's not allowed, though that's not to say it hasn't been without controversy. Iowa law is very clear about when you can use your phone while in your car.

The law states.

...a law enforcement officer can stop any driver who is texting (reading, writing, or sending) or using any other portable electronic device, unless the motor vehicle is at a complete stop and off the traveled portion of the roadway.

So while you're stopped at a red light, you're still on the travel portion of the road. At least, I hope you are.

While I know it doesn't stop Iowans from checking their phone while stopped at a red light, just know that you can be pulled over and ticketed for doing so.

The reason the state and law enforcement are big advocates for even tougher laws is that individuals using their phones while driving are considered 4 times more likely to get into a serious auto wreck.
