With the Iowa high school football season winding down, district races and playoff qualifiers are being decided across the state.

For teams that qualify for the playoffs in the state's smallest four classes (8-player, A, 1A and 2A), their regular season ends this week. The playoff field in each class will feature 32 teams. The non-playoff qualifiers have the option of scheduling a ninth game, if they choose to.

Teams that compete in Iowa's three largest classes (3A, 4A and 5A) are playing a nine-game schedule, therefore each of them have two regular season games remaining. There will be 16 playoff qualifiers in each class.

Week eight of the season got off to an early start with Vinton-Shellsburg playing at Davenport Assumption Thursday night.

Three games on Friday night feature a match-up of rated (Associated Press poll) teams. The outcome of each one will determine a district championship.

One of the marquee games is a Class 3A showdown at Lyle Leinbaugh Stadium in Independence, where the sixth-ranked Mustangs (7-0) host No. 5 West Delaware (6-1). The winner claims the championship of District 3.

The co-leaders of Class A District 2 also play for the title and a favorable seed in the playoffs. Top-ranked West Hancock (7-0) hosts No. 3 North Butler (7-0) at Sanger Field in Britt.

In the eight-player class, No. 3 Easton Valley takes the 130-mile trip north along the Mississippi River from Preston to Lansing, where the River Hawks (7-0) will play Kee High (7-0) for bragging rights in District 5.

Grundy Center is also hosting a showcase game in Class A District 3. The fifth-ranked Spartans (6-1) host unranked North Tama (6-1) for the championship. North Tama, which has the state's leading passer in quarterback Gabe Kopriva (2,095 yards), fell out of the top 10 this week after a 14-0 setback to Wapsie Valley.
