Despite our best efforts to forget it in the years to come, we're going to remember 2020 for a variety of reasons. One of those will certainly be the fact that we missed out on so many of our favorite events this year, including fairs. And of course, the delectable food that comes with them.

Cheese curds, smoothies, and tenderloins are among my must-haves every year during fair time, but thankfully they're all things you can get in other places. That isn't the case with many fair foods, however, including what Gurney's says is the favorite fair food in Iowa... deep-fried butter. Huh? I must admit I've never even tried it, but apparently it's time.

Gurney's took a look at the highest-searched fair foods on Google in each state. That resulted in 27 different foods being chosen across the 50 states.

Deep-fried butter is the favorite of both Iowa and Washington. Sue Gooding, the spokeswoman for the State Fair of Texas, told Today it tastes like "a hot roll with butter. It tastes great. It's like a mix between a biscuit or a croissant that is just stuffed to the gills with butter on the inside." I must admit that sounds pretty good.

Which food was at the top in more states than any other? Cotton candy. Those eight states all get an 'F' for creativity. The second most popular choice was onion rings, with five different states searching for it the most. It was chili in four states. Seriously? Cinnamon rolls and chicken fingers were each tops in three states. Besides deep-fried butter, cheese fries, corn dogs, fried bacon, gyros, and pretzel dogs were number one in two different states. One state each chose caramel apples, deep-fried Kool Aid, deep-fried Oreos, Dole Whip, Fried Ice Cream, Fried Sweep Potato, Fudge, Funnel Cake, Kettle Corn, Pickles, Sherbert, Turkey Leg, Boudin (pork, rice & vegetables), Kielbasa (polish sausage), Low Country Boil (typically shrimp, sausage, potatoes, and corn), and Totchos (tater tot nachos). You can't say there isn't a wonderful variety.

According to the New York Times, deep-fried butter debuted at the Iowa State Fair in 2011. Next year, I'm putting it on my "must try" list. Have you eaten it? More importantly, did you like it?
