A recent news source just released a list of, what they believe, to be the strangest laws in all 50 states across the country. For the most part, I think they did a pretty good job. There are a lot of weird laws out there. Did you know in California, it's illegal to "eat frogs that died in a frog-jumping competition?"

In Indiana, "you can't catch fish with your bare hands and you also can't use dynamite." In Mississippi, "you aren't allowed to swear in public if two or more people are around." You can find the total list of the most bizarre laws in all 50 states here.

I agree with almost all of the laws that appear in the article however, I don't really think the law they listed as "Iowa's most bizarre" is really that strange at all. Am I missing something here?

Fox News reports, in Iowa, under Title V, Chaption 192, section 143, "imitation butter shall be sold only under the name oleomargarine, and no person shall use in any way, in connection or association with the sale or exposure for sale or advertisement of any such product, the word butter, creamery, or dairy, or name or representation of any breed of dairy cattle."

So...if you're selling margarine, you have to call it margarine. Is this really that bizarre? You can't sell something that's not butter and call it butter in your advertisements. Makes sense to me. If someone were to do that, wouldn't that just be false advertising? There are plenty of state and federal laws in place to prevent false or misleading advertising. Personally, I don't find this that bizarre.

According to Forest Grove, Iowa has laws like;

  • A man with a mustache may never kiss a woman in public.
  • In Ottumwa, it is unlawful for any male person to wink at any female person who he is unacquainted with, in city limits.
  • Horses are forbidden to eat fire hydrants in Marshalltown, Iowa

These laws seem a lot more bizarre if you ask me. Out of all of the bizarre laws in Iowa to choose from, they essentially went with "you can't falsely advertise fake butter."

Butter in Iowa was very recently in the news as Iowa is trying to ban a butter alternative.
