The Waterloo Black Hawks extended their winning streak to three with a shootout win in Dubuque Wednesday night. Tonight the Teddy Bear Toss tradition on Thanksgiving night continues at Young Arena.

In the first shootout of the season for Waterloo and Dubuque, the Black Hawks prevailed 3-2 while visiting the Fighting Saints at Mystique Ice Center Wednesday.

Jackson Cates scored the only goal during the three-round shootout, lifting the first opportunity for either team over Jaxon Castor’s blocker while gliding from right to left. Matej Tomek stopped three Dubuque bids to even the count.

Bobby Trivingno had put the puck in the net on a shorthanded breakaway in the first at 13:25, but the goal didn’t count. Even though the disc and goalie Castor ended up in the cage, the whistle never sounded, and the puck was completely inside the goal line when Castor stood up, the goal was disallowed. The Hawks put the puck in the net again at the same end of the ice minutes later, but Ben Copeland’s shot beat Castor after the first period had ended.

Just 65 seconds earler, at 18:55, Dubuque scored the only goal that made it onto the scoreboard on a shorthanded backhander by Alex Steeves.

Dubuque made it 2-0 at 7:59 of the second period during their third five-on-three power play of the game. Quinn Preston lifted in the rebound of Brendan Bushey’s first shot.

Cates was on the business end of the Waterloo comeback. At 10:04, Cates capitalized during a power play, scoring into an open side after a back-and-forth passing sequence with Garret Wait. Cates struck again during a subsequent power play at 18:36. Trivigno created the chance from behind the net, and Cates was opportunistic when a deflected puck landed right in front of him.

The third period at the five-minute overtime which followed were scoreless.

Tomek made 21 saves for the win, while Castor stopped 30 shots in regulation and overtime.
