2020-21 Iowa High School Girls Basketball Pre-Season Rankings

With the 2020-21 Iowa high school basketball season just getting underway, the first girls rankings have been released.

Eight teams from the Cedar Valley and Northeast Iowa are featured in the pre-season poll, released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) Thursday. Some area teams opened their season just after after the rankings were released.

Waterloo West is the highest rated team from the region. The Wahawks debuted at No. 1 in Class 5A, and Cedar Falls premiered at No. 6. West opened its season Thursday night with a 40-12 victory over Dunkerton at home in Siddens Gymnasium.

Also Thursday night, Waverly-Shell Rock defeated Denver 53-27. The season-opening game was an early test of two teams ranked among the top five in their respective classes. Waverly-Shell Rock is rated fourth in Class 4A and the Cyclones are No. 3 in Class 2A.

Denver is one of three North Iowa Cedar League teams featured in the 2A survey. Also ranked are Grundy Center at No. 11 and Dike-New Hartford at No. 14.

The other teams ranked from area are Center Point-Urbana (No. 4 in Class 3A) and Turkey Valley (No. 10 in Class 1A).
