Coralville Police Officer Dies While on Duty from Medical Issue
This weekend was all about fun, relaxation, and downtime for many Iowans. But one group that never sits still is our police force. Sadly, emergencies never take a 3-day weekend.
On Sunday afternoon, the Coralville Police Department received a call about a child shooting accident. One of the responding officers was 28-year Coralville PD veteran Sergeant John Williams.
In the aftermath of the incident, Sgt. Williams suffered what the Coralville Police Department's Facebook posting referred to as an "acute medical emergency". Sergeant Williams's passing was confirmed by the Johnson County Emergency Management Agency's Facebook page, shortly after the Coralville PD put out its Facebook statement.
After the announcement of the passing of Sgt. Williams, numerous other Iowa police forces, and Iowa lawmakers took to social media to remember the almost 30-year tenured officer.
According to a KCRG report, Sgt. Williams joined the force in 1994 and had worked as a patrol shift supervisor and field training officer and supervisor. There is no further information at this time as to what the medical emergency was.
The situation Sgt. Williams was responding to involved a gunshot injury sustained by a three-year-old child. Police arrived at the 900 block of Boston Way where KCRG reports the child was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and at approx. 7:00 pm he was pronounced dead of their injuries.
The report says the child was been identified as Damaria Sanders. Police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Coralville Police Department or Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
