You Won’t Believe Who Showed Love to One Eastern Iowa Business

It's always exciting to see one of your favorite local businesses getting recognition.

It's even more exciting when that recognition comes from someone who is pretty well-known.

I was scrolling through Facebook the other day when I saw a post from an unlikely celebrity showing some love to a Cedar Rapids business. I'm still relatively shocked by the random post that the rapper Common made that had an Eastern Iowa connection.

Common is a relatively big name in the rap world. He's collaborated with the likes of legends in the genre like Mary J. Blige while also earning himself three Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, and a Golden Globe.

The Chicago native and activist was quick to show his love for a Midwestern business earlier this month. He shared a link to a Cedar Rapids bakery called Shawnniecakes on his Facebook page and encouraged his 3.6 million followers to check them out.

"A special S/O to my sister Shawn for being an amazing baker and businesswoman. If you’re in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area, check out shawnniecakes.com [and] if you’re not, they can ship to you."

Most of the rapper's content has been consisting of promotion for his book and book tour, so this shoutout was a bit of a happy disturbance.

Not the First Time Big Names Recognized Shawnieecakes

In May of 2021, 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' started up a segment/honor called the Colbert Small Biz Bump. The aim of this bit was to shine a spotlight on some exceptional small businesses that were struggling during the height of the COVID pandemic.

Shawnniecakes received this recognition and saw a bump in business.

The business opened up a new store location in Cedar Rapids last year. Now, Shawnniecakes Cafe is set up at 1800 1st Avenue NE, Ste 101 which is inside of Collins Community Credit Union.
