Here's one story that Cedar Rapids firefighters probably thought would never be written about them...

A very unique call came into the Cedar Rapids Fire Department Wednesday morning. As is always the case, they responded quickly. This time, they saved hundreds of pounds of sausage that would've otherwise spoiled and in turn helped a local charity that, like the fire department, answers the call for others.

According to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, Captain Terry McAtee of Cedar Rapids' Engine 5 got a call about a semi that was going to have to have its refrigeration unit turned off. The semi was loaded with 500 pounds of Italian sausage that weren't going to be able to be delivered and needed a home. That's when the firefighters of Engine 5 went to work.

The first order of business was to unload the semi and get the truck to someplace that would be able to utilize it. It was off to the Salvation Army. Then, to unload all that spicy sausage.

And, of course, get it in the freezer.

Salvation Army Kitchen Manager Misty Newman was a very thankful recipient and the fire department says she's already thinking of recipes that include sausage. We couldn't agree more with what the Salvation Army said afterward, "Thank you Cedar Rapids Fire Department for helping us tackle the disaster of food insecurity!" Nicely done.
