Cedar Falls Woman Accused of Fatally Shooting Husband

A Cedar Falls woman has been charged with first-degree murder following a fatal shooting on Wednesday evening.

A 66-year-old woman has been charged with first-degree murder.

In Iowa, first-degree murder is a Class A felony. If convicted, it's an automatic life sentence.

What We Know About the Shooting

Police responded to a domestic dispute at 4317 Newland Drive around 6:30 p.m., where they found 72-year-old David Alan Charlton deceased. Charlton had been fatally shot, according to a KCRG report.

His wife, 66-year-old Kimberly Ann Charlton, was taken into custody at the scene by the responding police officers.

According to a criminal complaint, Kimberly Charlton told investigators that her husband had attempted to physically assault her in a bedroom when their family dog intervened.

What Happened After the Alleged Attempted Assault 

After the altercation, David Charlton reportedly left the room, retrieved a walking cane, and returned, threatening the dog.

As he followed the dog down the hallway, Kimberly Charlton allegedly retrieved a handgun from a Crown Royal bag and warned him to stop.

She admitted to shooting him in the back when he did not comply.

Charlton is currently being held in Black Hawk County on charges of first-degree murder with a bond set at one million dollars.
