Cargill Workers on Strike in Cedar Rapids: What You Need to Know
A Cedar Rapids branch of the privately owned company, Cargill, has officially gone on strike.
Cargill specializes in agricultural supply chain as well as food production.
According to the corporation's official website, Cargill is organized into five different enterprises such as agricultural supply chain, protein & salt, animal nutrition & health, food & Bioindustrial, financial services & metals.
According to reports, the three-year contract between Cargill's corn milling plant in Cedar Rapids and the Teamsters Local 238 union expired on Tuesday, October 1st. Approximately one hundred workers are now on strike after going through a vote to approve said strike.
The union workers are asking for a $3 per hour raise over three years. Reportedly, the company went back to them with a lower offer and rejected it.
In a report from KCRG, these union members are just asking for competitive wages that keeps up with the increased cost of living.
Another factor that plays into this strike is improved working conditions, according to reports.
Officials from the company are hoping that the upcoming negotiations will allow the Teamsters and management to come to some sort of agreement that will benefit all parties involved.
This is still a developing story, and we will make sure to keep you updated as the strike continues.
