Gabriel Carriere stopped 22 of 23 shots, anchoring the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 3-1 win at the Resch Center against the Green Bay Gamblers and a 3-0 start to the 2019/20 season.

Connor Caponi scored the only goal of the first two periods on a transition chance at 5:48.  He was the puck carrier on a two-on-one, and elected to take the shot himself, snapping a wrister from the top of the left circle past goalie Gavin Enright.

After Waterloo had a 10-4 shots edge in the first period, Green Bay put 11 chances on frame in a scoreless second. It was Carriere’s busiest period.  The Hawks had eight, most of them coming during an extended power play sequence just before intermission.

The Gamblers got their equalizer at 5:36 of the third period. The puck came off the leftwing boards in the Waterloo zone, and Alex Servagno found it, lifting a shot from the inside edge of the left circle to the top corner on the short side.

Waterloo retook the lead just over 10 minutes later. Xander Lamppa turned in the left corner and spun a pass across the face of goal. Ondrej Psenicka was on the weak side and lifted in a one-touch shot. Patrick Gozzo put in an empty net goal from deep in his own zone with 1:18 to play in order to seal it.

The Black Hawks return to action next Friday at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena against the RoughRiders. Their first home game of the regular season is Saturday, October 12th vs Tri-City.
