A Northeast Iowa man, accused of killing another man during a fight, has been found guilty.


On Wednesday (March 31), a Dubuque County jury returned to the courtroom, finding 26 year old Deonte Ellison of Dubuque, guilty of Voluntary Manslaughter.

The original incident happened in Dubuque on July 2nd of 2020, when Ellison got into a fight with Curtis Smothers of Dubuque.

Sometime during the fight, Ellison shot Smothers in the chest. Smothers died from the wound. At that time, Ellison was charged with 1st Degree Murder.

The lesser charge of Voluntary Manslaughter carries a punishment of 10 years in prison.
